H1N1 Confirmed at Ateneo de Davao

Yesterday, I was told by a person who is a student at Ateneo de Davao High School that there was a confirmed case of H1N1 in one of the High School classes at Ateneo de Davao.  I checked all kinds of news sources, online and offline, but could find nothing about this.

This student, yesterday, told me that a lot of high school students were being sent to the clinic at Ateneo for screening, because one case had already been confirmed.  Basically anybody who had any kind of illness, fever, etc., was being checked.

In addition to this screening, all students from the class that has a confirmed H1N1 case have been sent home, and that one class has been suspended for the next 10 days.

Because sometimes young people may not get the story completely straight, or some may inflate what they hear, this morning I phoned Ateneo and spoke to somebody in the High School Clinic.  I related the entire story that I had been told, and she confirmed that this was exactly correct.

Swine Flu H1N1 at Ateneo de Davao High SchoolI hope that the actions of Ateneo have confined this one case and not allowed it to spread to other students.  I believe that they did the right thing by suspending that class.  However, I am rather surprised that Ateneo did not send any kind of communication to parents, to apprise them of the situation of confirmed H1N1 Virus at the school.  I believe that this should have been a high priority thing for the school administration to do.  When you fail to inform people, rumors can run rampant, and when it is rumor instead of official communication, sometimes the story gets blown out of proportion.

Lets hope that the H1N1 at Ateneo de Davao High School has been confined.

Hi Steve – I would agree with everything you said. Still would be nice for parents to be notified of an outbreak, though.

The Swine Flu is becoming so widespread that in the US there is no longer an effort to test for cases, excepting cases, or potential “swarms” of cases with unusual properties which might indicate a change or subtype.

For most it is no more deadly than a typical seasonal flu. It will become ever more widely disbursed with about the same number of deaths as a seasonal flu might have. And remember that the seasonal flu causes more deaths say in Davao than Dengue does each year.

Practice cough and sneeze etiquette, wash hand frequently, and if you develop a fever, sore throat, and muscle aches with or without gastro-intestinal symptoms you probably have it. If you are immuno-compromised, or if the person is very old or young seek medical attention especially if respiratory issues become prevalent.

My prediction is that within two months it will be so widespread that most of us will have already had it and recovered.
