Friends of Mindanao
About a week or two ago, I was out with Feyma. We went to a place here in Davao called the Swiss Deli. As the name implies, it’s a European style Deli. They sell lunch type meats, sausages, and European goods that are imported. A lot of foreigners buy stuff there, because they generally have a lot of items that you can’t find elsewhere in town. When I walked in the door, I was greeted by a fellow named Ian Fredricks. I am not certain, but I think he is from New Zealand. We chatted for about 5 minutes, and he invited me to attend a meeting tomorrow (May 2) which he and his associates hold monthly. Their group is called the “Friends of Mindanao.”
Well, I don’t really know much about these guys, but I am planning to attend the meeting tomorrow and check it out. It seems like it should be fairly nice, it’s a get together for coffee and also for talk among the group of foreigners. I am sure that we all have things in common that we can talk about. The group seems to be mostly centered on business, which is a topic that really is interesting for me. Each meeting they have a special speaker, somebody from the group who can tell about his business experiences and such.
So, tomorrow, I’ll be attending the meeting, and I’ll see if I like it and want to go back for future meetings. The name of the group intrigues me, and makes me feel that it is something that I will probably enjoy. If they truly are “friends” of Mindanao, and they talk about Mindanao at all, I’m sure it will be interesting!

I think having a local peer group of foreigners in your locality is an excellent way to network, sharing information and tips on local living is an excellent way to keep informed, plus it gives you a chance to spend some time with other foreigners living in your area, I would imagine that it will be an enjoyable experience.
Hi Pete – I really enjoyed attending the meeting this morning! It was a great group of guys, and I see potential for some new friendships, and even some possible business deals together.
Bob,
I read your blog every day and enjoy your stories.
My fiancee lives in Davao City and was there for 2 weeks over Christmas.
I am returning this July for 2 weeks from Florida.
I was wondering where the Swiss Deli is located. Last trip the only foods I found that was familiar was the bakery goods in the mall at the Euro bakery.
Maybe you can email me other american or european style resturants.
Hi Bruce – thanks for visiting my blog!

I am delighted that such a progressive group of good men and women exist in Mindanao. Your dedication and goodwill deserve the full support of the Mindanao people. I would be very happy to help in any I can. I am an author-historian and I just finished my book ISLAM WAR ON TERROR (history, 700 pages). This is a book that chronicles the ups and downs of the history of Mindanao since the 11th century, right down to contemporary history which we are witnessing today. It will be available this month.
Thanks Bob for your help and dedication!
