Seaweed farmers in the municipalities of Marunggas and Luuk in Sulu have successfully ventured into high-value aquaculture production because of the assistance provided by USAID’s Targeted Commodity Expansion Program (TCEP). Implemented by the agency’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, TCEP introduced approximately 7,000 former MNLF combatants to the production of high-value finfish, fruits and vegetables, thus providing avenues for generating dramatically increased income.

The fish cages shown are constructed under or at the side of seaweed solar dyers, which were also constructed by the GEM Program. Seaweed farmers in Sulu have maximized the economic potential of their solar dryers, and earn significantly higher incomes by producing and selling both seaweeds and fish. Farmers in the area have, to date, harvested over 6.9 metric metric tons of finfish worth P1.9 million, from their 2,300 square meter fish pens. GEM’s initiatives are part of President Arroyo’s strong commitment to further peace and development in Sulu. GEM is being implemented under the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo). (GEM Program)
