Why no Christmas Tree at SM City Davao?

No Christmas Tree

About a week ago, I went to SM City in Davao to do some shopping. At that time, something struck me… It was already December, and there was no Christmas Tree at SM! I was kind of shocked by this, because SM has always had a Christmas Tree, and the mall has always been well decorated for Christmas!

This year, on top of having no Christmas Tree, there are few Christmas decorations at all in the Mall! The only Christmas decorations that I saw in the mall when I was looking today were a few clear colored Christmas lights marking the border between the first and second floor of the mall! I am really disappointed that SM has chosen to not display Christmas decor this year. In addition, in the past there has always been a lot of Christmas music playing over the mall’s sound system, but this year the amount of Christmas music that they are playing is very limited.

I am wondering, is SM still hoping to capatalize on the Christmas Shopping Season this year? I have decided, personally to spend money at NCCC Mall this year, because they have a very large Christmas Tree right at the entrance, and you can just feel the joy of the Christmas season when you go to NCCC, compared to SM.

I haven’t checked the other malls in Davao, but over the next few days, I will certainly make it a point to go and see what they are offering.

Come on, SM! It’s not too late to get into the spirit and put up your Christmas Tree!

SM City Davao Christmas 2008 get some shut-eye
    SM grocery gets narrower

It’s sleepy, like taking a nap.

The once merry and lively SM brand has come to a point of getting some forty winks. Just very light decorations — just really a few of them. It doesn’t seem to be noticed.

Also, the renovation of SM City Davao grocery which states “sorry for the inconvenience, we are renovating to serve you better” literally does not.

The once shopping convenience has gone. It has narrow aisles and they have closed around 3 meters on the left entrance near the baggage area which leads to narrowing down of the the aisles.

The color, yes the new redesign concept for me is not soothing to my taste. It has yellow pigments that looks exactly NCCC mall grocery. The new design at SM food court is also not good. Well, anyway it’s only my opinion.

I am just sad because SM had been for years superlative in their designs.

@HR Education: This post was from 2005. There was no economic meltdown at that time. I think you overlooked the date of the post.

Probably, SM symphat[ized]* to the world economic meltdown. Or most probably, they also have been hit by the financial crisis knowing BDO (their sister company has $80 million account (please verify the accuracy of it) in the defunct Lehman Brothers. So most likely, if my hypothesis is true, then, they should have been cost-cutting by now from luxurious christmas decorations.

Inasmuch as we Filipinos wanted to celebrate christmas by sugar-coating our surroundings with lights and colors despite having an empty stomach, giant businessmen don’t think that way. They are on the lookout of the longevity of their business.

    …masyadong serious

    or maybe,

patikim pa lang yan ng SM City Davao… maybe…

di pa sila tapos mag decorate :)

*noun kasi eh, i don’t know how to make it with “ized”

The author should’ve talked and asked the management of the SM City Davao why do not they have their Christmas Tree.I think that would be justifiable.

    Hehehe,

FNC got caught pawing Holiday Tree Ornaments. They quickly reversed course but it may have caused Gibson and O’Reilly some embarrasment.

When I was in the UAE our department in the Jemaah Islamiya (Islamic Institute aka the UAE University) had a euphamistically named Christmas party. Of course, in that setting I did not mind soft-pedalling the Christmas party. However, more than a few merchants in the UAE seemed okay with pushing Christmas spirit.

A woman from India I worked with rolled her eyes over it. She said she was Hindu and that was that but it was silly for people walking on eggshells. Indeed.

Merry Christmas at manigong bagong taon para sa inyong lahat. Sorry, I only know one Bisayan phrase and that is reserved for the Wise and Benevolent Empress of the Blogosphere. ;-)

    Hi Craig,

We get a few US TV stations on our satellite receiver, and I am an avid Fox News watcher. Because of all the news I’ve hear from O’Reilly and others on FOX, I was a little more aware of it when I noticed that SM didn’t have a tree this year. I wonder why, but can’t really figure it out. Is it a gesture to the Muslim minority here? Is it a budgetary thing? I notice that they constantly have the floor space in the Atrium rented out now, and that is where teh tree used to be. Still, you would think they could find a place for a Christmas tree. Like I said in the article, I’ll just spend my money at NCCC, since they are displaying the holiday spirit.

    Hi Bob,
The christmas tree issue has been RAGING here in the states…with the PC secular crowd pushing for “Holiday” this and holiday that.

We (the conservative ilk) have been pushing back bigtime.
