Alleged mastermind of Bali Blasts hiding out in Mindanao

Indonesian Islamic militant Dulmatin
Word is coming from multiple sources that the man who allegedly plotted the recent Bali Bombing incident is hiding out in Mindanao. This is coming from reports by the US Embassy in Manila, the US Military, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and other agencies. The alleged mastermind is named Dulmatin, with an alias of Amar Usman. Current reports are that he is holed up under the protection of Abu Sayyaf leader Khadaffy Janjalani, somewhere in Mindanao, along with fellow JI member Umar Patek.
The AFP has even issued a statement that they have confirmed that the two JI terrorists are hiding out with Abu Sayyaf cover in Maguindanao, in the center of Mindanao. The USA is offering a $10 Million reward for the capture or killing of Dulmatin. This reward amount is the third largest reward for capture or killing of any terrorist in the world. The only terrorists higher on the reward list are Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden and Al Qaeda Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Currently, even the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a Muslim separatist group is confirming the presence of the two JI terrorists in Mindanao.
Given the recent indictments in the Espionage case against Filipino opposition members, relations with the United States could be considered somewhat “touchy” right now. The capture or killing of either of these JI terrorists on Philippine soil would certainly be a boost for the esteem of the Philippines, and a plus for relations with the USA.

Hi miketoler – Just teasing you, my friend. No hard feelings, glad you aren’t offended. Good luck, I hope that your prediction comes true!
Hey Mindanao Bob, I have Asperger’s Syndrome, which means I have secondary intelligence over my adversaries. The Pisces is weird don’t get me wrong. I’m not offended on your feedback. If it comes true, I will be e-mailing you back far
away; “I Told You So.” By the way I don’t take medications. I’m just different.
Hi miketoler – Just want to make sure… did you take your medication today? For your own well being, it would be a good idea to stay medicated!
In month/date/year numerology never heard of in the world this is how its done; Take the 1 year anniversary of the Bali Bombings to the road of the capture of his wife and kids. 10.12.03. Add 3-1, 3-2, Subtract 1-0 and 2-1. You’ll get 4 years, 5th Month, 11th Day. Now way back on that day it would’ve sounded hard to believe to the individual not recognized throughout the world. Now take the capture of the wife and kids to the capture or extermination of Dulmatin. 5.11.07. I would add two missing odd numbers 3 and 9. Subtract 5-3, Add 7-1, Add 1-0 and multiply 9-1. You’ll get 2 years, 8th Month, 19th Day. Also take the 5 year anniversary of the attacks, 10.12.07. Add 2-0, 7-1, 1-0 and 7-2 and you’ll get the same results. I’m the only one that has this God given psychic talent. Would it be great if I nailed this one 90 to 100% on the money. I’m not known in the world just yet but I will be surfacing soon to bring surprise. Since I’m a Pisces the JI and MILF will be shivering under my power and not even know it. Who knows the FBI, CIA and the Phillipine intelligence might be looking for me while I’m far away in the US.
i am researching a project about General Facts About the Philippines at the National College of Science and Technology. I’m a 1st year student there, 17years old.
i have found the northernmost island of the Philippines as Y’Ami Island. The thing is, i get confused to what the southernmost island is.
but i’m sorry but i don’t think i can agree that Mindanao is the southernmost island because Philippines, as an archipelago, is composed of 7,107 islands. and if we consider Mindanao AN ISLAND, then Luzon and Visayas are going to be classified as islands too. therefore, the Philippines is only made up of 3 islands (if we use your logic).
on the other hand, as i may recall, Luzon Visayas and Mindanao are called “island groups” which means that it is composed of a cluster of islands. yes, mindanao(an island group) is in the south… but which of the islands included in the Mindanao group is the southernmost? the answer to that is the one that should be considered “The southernmost island of the Philippines”.
is saluag island a part of mindanao? i can’t find it anywhere in google.com, and my history book says that it is the southernmost island of the philippines…
I have plenty of good muslim friends and when in fact, I consider them as my extended family. I respect their beliefs and culture and they respect mine. Other than that, I don’t trust muslims that I don’t know. My opinion could be wrong but that’s how I feel.
Peter has a good question. But I’m not sure what the full import of the question is, because I do not know if his perspective is that of a complete outsider or of one familiar with the situation in Mindanao.
I, for one, grew up in Cagayan de Oro (Northern Mindanao) and we have always co-existed with the Muslim population because of its proximity to us. The Lanao provinces are only some 90kms going northwest of us, accessible via a very good cemented highway. As a matter of fact, many of us who are present-day Christians can point to some Muslim family roots in our past lineage.
Even today, where the Muslim population in the city has grown exponentially, I still doubt whether the collective population itself is sophisticated enough to understand or is fully cognizant of the full meaning and ramifications of religious/racial profiling.
To illustrate, the typical teens in our city, of all ethnic backgrounds, are practically indistinguishable from one another, except for the different languages sometimes used in their conversation. Though Tagalog or Bisayan becomes the common language used to link across ethnic boundaries. Of course, a good many of the older Muslims, especially the women, still retain their traditional garb which cultural practice they try to hand down to their daughters.
But in another vein, Christians and Muslims continue to be quietly and subtly wary of each other, trying to keep as much distance in places where they live and worship. With the Christians being more aggressive and assertive in choosing not to live close to Muslim families. Though Muslim families, being still the minority, will live where they can find available housing, regardless of the area’s ethnic composition. And especially in subdivisions that are considered desirable by Christians.
And this wariness and reticence have been there for as long as we can remember. Racial/religious profiling is of course, a new term that became more pronounced world-wide after 9/11.
Just my perspectives.
Hi Everybody,
Thanks for your comments! Don’t worry, we live a safe life here, and do things to ensure the safest lifestyle we can have here. Overall, though, the area where we live is quite safe, I would have to say.
Peter… I don’t necessarily think that religious profiling would be effective here.
The problem is that not all of these terrorists are Muslim, and also most Muslims are not terrorists. The population of Muslims in Mindanao is fairly large, and only a small percentage of those are involved in any kind of terrorism, so profiling Muslims would probably not be effective.
should religious profiling be allowed in Mindanao to locate terrorists?
Bob, please be very, very careful. I grew up in Davao, (and yes, Mindanao is the Philippines’ southernmost island group – to which Tawi-Tawi belongs.) Mindanao is certainly not Iraq, but I won’t call it peaceful and safe, and especially so for non-natives. Still, I admire your faith and courage in the island. Please don’t be complacent though and always keep your guard up.
Stay safe.
I also came here from Michelle Malkin’s website. My wife is from Bantayan Island (part of the Cebu province), the little island off the northwest tip of Cebu.
We and our 4 kids plan to visit next year and make a side trip to Davao. My wife’s uncle lives there.
I agree with you, only little pockets of the Philippines are unsafe. Just be alert and know who you are dealing with, and you will be okay is my strategy when visiting the P.I.
Good luck
Another MM reader.
Great stuff, sir.
I’ll be back.
Cheers!
Dinah
Sorry, a little correction.
..I’m one of those MM readers…”
Hi, Bob:
First, I’m of those Michelle Malkin readers that’s been directed to your site. I live in California in Tracy east of the San Francisco area.
Glad to know you are in Mindanao because I too come from Mindanao, specificially Cagayan de Oro, way up in the northern part, and which I visit often. Visiting your site allowed me also to get to know the site of WOW Cagayan de Oro. Did not know there was one.
And indeed it is easy to get confused about Mindanao, what it covers and how far it goes. I bet you if the country had won its fight for Sabah, that would also be part of Mindanao.
I have little reason to doubt that the suspected mastermind could be in Mindanao, given the absence of security, adequate patrols, etc, in the backdoors of Mindanao. Many probably have not heard about stories of past travels of Bin Laden to that area, including acquiring a local bride for himself.
I would like to see an independent Mindanao. Away from the evil of manila government.
Hi Jess,
Great to have you! No problem about the previous comment. In today’s world we are all busy, and tend to skim over things.
Based on your IP address, I would guess that you live in the States. Are you Filipino, or what brought about your interest in Mindanao? I have been living here in Mindanao for nearly 6 years now, and love it here. Before coming here to live, I had been frequently visiting since 1990, and have visited many parts of Mindanao since that time. I hope that someday I can see parts of the island that are sort of “off limits” to me now due to the peace and order situation. But, thankfully, most parts of Mindanao are very safe, only a few isolated parts of the island are “off limits”.
Come back for a visit any time!
My apologies, Bob.
On a different note, I have stumbled into your site through Michelle Malkin’s and I guess I will now be your regular reader (a more careful reader next time.)
Who cares where the exact location of Mindanao is… it’s in the south. Let’s kill that coward terrorist and make some money
Jess, read more carefully. I said that Tawi Tawi is part of A Mindanao Province. In other words, Mindanao is composed of many provinces. Tawi Tawi is part of one of those provinces. That is clearly what was said. Perhaps you read it too quickly.
Mindanao is a province? I do not think so.
Craig,
Since Tawi Tawi is under the administration of Mindanao, it is considered part of Mindanao. Tawi Tawi is part of a Mindanao Province. Thus, I am sorry, but you are incorrect. Mindanao is indeed the southernmost island of the Philippines.
Thank you for visiting the site.
Mindanao is not the southernmost island in the Philippines. That distinction belongs to Tawitawi Island and its siblings.
