Bernardo Memorial Elementary School in Tacurong City discover the beauty of mathematics and science in the pages of reference books acquired for their school library through a partnership between their parent-teacher association (PTA) and USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program. Approximately 168,000 students from more than 228 schools in Region 12 alone have benefited from mini libraries, home economics centers, science laboratories and other education aids provided through their PTAs’ fundraising efforts. Mindanao students get financial support to study mining engineering, other disciplines in high demand
PUERTO PRINCESA—Fifteen students from conflict-affected areas of Mindanao are being provided with financial support to enable them to complete college degrees in mining engineering. The groups includes two women who, once they pass the licensure examination, will be among the first Mindanao Muslim women mining engineers in the Philippines. “This scholarship will give me the chance to have a good career in a growing industry, and in my home region,” said Musarapa Insiang, who grew up in Datu Paglas, Maguindanao.
